Bierner honored by Skyland Conference coaches

Caitlin Bierner has been recognized by the Skyland Conference girls' volleyball coaches as one of the outstanding players. The Tigers' senior co-captain was accorded honorable mention status on the 2003 Skyland Conference All Star Team.
Bierner posted some impressive statistics as she completed her scholastic career. She delivered 63 service aces, spiked 59 kills, blocked 21 shots, scooped up a dozen digs and dished off 15 assists while the Tigers posted a 3-22 overall record.
"Bierner was our leader on the court," said head coach Mary Huizenga. "She earned the recognition she received from the other coaches and will be greatly missed next year."
Junior Amanda Wheaton served as the other co-captain on the squad that included eight members of the Class of 2005 who return next fall along with a quartet of sophomores who earned varsity monograms. Wheaton, a setter, recorded 33 aces, blasted 13 kills, had 51 tips, picked up 37 digs and distributed a team-high 65 assists.
"Wheaton is one of many talented members of our junior class," continued Huizenga. "She handled the responsibilities of being a junior captain in a positive way and will be one our leaders next year."
Brianne McLaughlin, a junior hitter, recorded a team-high 105 digs while displaying versatility with 56 service aces, 14 tips, 28 blocks and six assists. Her classmate Caitlin Burke, an outside hiter, picked up 47 digs, blaster 20 kills, posted 32 aces, nine tips, two blocks and four assists. Michele Matkowski, a setter, distributed 43 assists, served 15 aces and scooped up 22 digs while Krissy Yapaolo, a defensive specialist, blasted 59 kills, picked up 42 digs, served nine aces and had six tips.
Kate Goepp, another junior defensive specialist, spiked 59 kills, picked up 34 digs, recorded an ace and had two assists while Kym Dittemer was credited with 15 digs and one ace, kill and assist. Emily Davis, a setter, had 16 assists, eight digs and a tip.
All four sophomores produced impressive statistics and will be positive factors in the future development of the program. Middle hitter Lauren Kurela delivered a team-high 73 aces, spiked 62 kills, blocked 12 shots, scoopred up 35 digs and had a pair of assists.
Kristy Keiser, another middle hitter, served 23 aces, blasted 35 kills, blocked 18 shots, picked up 58 digs and dished off eight assists. Nicole Giuliano was credited with 21 aces, 12 kills, 13 tips, five blocked shots, 34 digs and seven assists while Ngan Chung, a setter, delivered 20 aces, picked up 15 digs, distributed 33 assists, blasted three kills and had eight tips.
With the game experience garnered this season by the underclass players, look for the Hackettstown varsity volleyball program to move to the next level.
