Warriors' JV field hockey closes with a flourish

Published in Echoes-Sentinel November 26, 2003

Watchung Hills' junior varsity field hockey squad of 16 student/athletes finished the campaign with a modest four-game unbeaten streak to post a 4-8-2 record. Junior Gia Gulotta, a fullback, and sophomore Maria Mascia, a center mid-fielder served as co-captains for Kathy Nagle's squad.
"As a team, there was continued improvement throughout the season," said Nagle. "Gia and Maria were great leaders who played major roles in the late season success. Both girls scored a goal with Maria picking up three assists as she was key to our transition game and a good playmaker."
Jessica McKeon, a mid-fielder/forward who netted a goal, and Gulotta were the only juniors on the roster that included 10 sophomores and four frosh. Angela Bova, Jackie Cesareo, Kim Pateman and Stephanie Stambaugh were the ninth-grade newcomers elevated to the JV level.
"Jackie was our second leading scorer with three goals and an assist while Angela had three goals and Kim one," continued Nagle. "The four freshmen will get an opportunity to earn spots in next year's varsity roster if they work hard in the off-season."
Among the sophomores, Brittany Callahan started in the goal for a dozen games. She faced 126 shots and came up with 104 saves.
"Brittany improved with every game," added Nagle. "She is very athletic and possesses godd hand-eye-foot coordination."
Katie Nadbielny was the squad's leading scorer, netting four goals and dishing off an assist while Maria Castagna and Danielle Gaeta tallied solo goals. The other members of the Class of 2006 were Adriene Angelo, Stephanie Blackadar, Erika Dawson, Erica Jungels and Stephanie Mulhern.
The purpose of the sub-varsity athletic levels in the scholastic system is to provide a training program for the underclass student/athletes as they develop and mature into seniors. This year's Watchung Hills junior varsity field hockey squad achieved that objective by displaying improvement with every passing contest.
Hunterdon Central and Warren Hills routed the Warriors by a combined score of 12-0 in the beginning of the season. When the teams met the second time, the Red Devils squeaked out a 1-0 victory and the Blue Streaks won 2-0. Hillsborough beat Watchung Hills 5-0 in the second game of the season and the Raiders had to go to overtime to pull out a 2-1 verdict in the second meeting.
Over the last four games, the Warriors battled Phillipsburg to a scoreless draw and followed with wins over Franklin, Bridgeater-Raritan and North Hunterdon.
"If the girls go to camps and work hard to improve their basic skills and fundamentals, eight of them could move up to the varsity next season," commented Nagle. "They improved during the season and now they must continue to improve in the off-season."

Feeder program shows positive results at frosh level

Published in Echoes-Sentinel November 26, 2003

Watchung Hills’ field hockey program is making great strides thanks to the youth program that is now in its second year of existence. While the freshmen’s record of displayed only one win and five ties, coach Mike Gillen’s squad was in contention in every game, even with four players moved up to the junior varsity level.
"The impact of the feeder program was quite evident this fall," said Gillen. "There was an enthusiastic turn our and the players even showed up for pre-season practice with their own sticks. For the first time, the incoming class had an understanding of the basic skills and techniques of the sport."
A 1-0 victory over North Hunterdon in season’s finale will be what is remembered years from now. That was the squad’s only victory but they did battle to five ties.
Jenna Alfano and Nicole Wirtanen were elected co-captains by the team members.
"Jenna is a center-midfielder with good skills," commented Gillen. "She was a good leader whose presence evoked a form of electricity on the field."
"Nicole played at the defensive end of the field and was an outstanding sweeper," continued Gillen. "She has the drive to become a very good player over the next three years."
Nine of the players saw action on the forward front wall. They were Alyson Angelo, Kelly Brennan. Sara Coley, Jacqueline Diaz, Kelli Dougherty, Jacqueline Gaeta, Sarah Heath. Laura Stiller and Carlie Wazra.
Playing in the midfield were Lindsay Carey, Brooke Cassidy, Stephanie Whitney and Christine Wong while Blair Chermidih and Claire Vaughn occupied the fullback slots in front of goalkeeper Amy Thomson.
"Amy kept is in all of the games," added Gillen. "She is quick to the ball and will challenge for a spot on next year’s varsity roster."
With 22 ninth-graders in the program several of whom will be in contention for varsity roles next September, the Warriors are building a foundation to take the varsity and junior varsity programs to the next level in 2004.

Lady Warriors close out season with Senior Night

Published in Echoes-Sentinel November 13, 2003

Last Tuesday, Watchung Hills closed out the 2003 field hockey campaign with a frustrating 3-2 loss to North Hunterdon in overtime on Seniors Night in Warren. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 2-2. North Hunterdon pulled out the win off a corner with one second left in overtime.
Melissa Schneiderman tallied a goal in the first half off an assist from Kristin D'Alessandro who netted the second half goal. Goalie Tracey Millery turned aside 21 shots to keep the Lady Warriors in contention.

Boylan, D’Alessandro, Mascia named tri-captains

Published in Echoes-Sentinel September 11, 2003

Allison Boylan, Kristen D’Allesandro and Catherine Mascia have been named the tri-captains of the 2003 Watchung Hills field hockey team. Coming off a 7-11-1 record last season, head coach Maria Bachert had a large turnout that required cuts before the varsity roster was set for the opening game against the Red Devils of Hunterdon Central on Friday in Flemington.
"Our objective this season is to qualify for the state tournament and go deeper into the counties," said Bachert. "It was great to have so many girls try out for the team but sad to have to cut some of them."
Boylan is a senior forward who tied for the team lead in goals as junior with three while dishing off one assist. D’Alessandro, a senior midfielder, was the Warriors’ leading scorer with three goals and six assists while Mascia, also a senior midfielder, scored one goal and was credited with a pair of assists.
"D’Alessandro had a great junior year and I am looking for more of the same from her as she is a captain for the second straight year," added Bachert.
Last season, D’Alessandro posted team-high statistics in several categories, including 30 steals, 49 dodges and 45 tackles in addition to leading the team in scoring.
"Boylan provides experience up front on the forward line," continued Bachert. "She positions herself to find the ball and was credited with 16 shots on goal last year."
"Mascia is one of three sisters in our program," commented Bachert. "Theresa, a junior, is on the varsity while Maria, a sophomore, is one of many talented underclass players who will garner experience on the junior varsity team."
Catherine Mascia tied D’Alessandro for the team-lead in tackles with 45 a year ago and ranked third in shots on goal and dodges.
In addition to the tri-captains, the varsity roster includes five other members of the Class of 2004. Allison Klug, Ali Naskret. Melissa Schneiderman, Malloree Tarnowski and Lindsey Winget provide the team with experienced veterans.
Klug a defender, recorded 39 tackles, 11 dodges and seven steals while Naskret picked off five steals and was credited with seven shots on goal. Schneiderman ranked second on last year’s team in scoring with three goals and two assists on just 10 official shots on goal. She was credited with 23 tackles and 16 steals.
Tarnowski converted one of her eight shots on goal and dished off a pair of assists while coming up with seven steals and 14 tackles. Winget finished her junior campaign with seven tackles, four dodges and two assists.
There are eight juniors on this year’s varsity roster prior to the start of the season, two of whom played at the varsity level in 2002. Sarah Fenstmaker is a defender who picked off seven steals and was credited with 16 steals. Lauren Lavorario, a forward, connected on one of her four official shots on goal and stole the ball of four occasions.
The other six competed at the junior varsity level in 2002. Melinda Brechbuehler, a forward, recorded 12 dodges, six steals and six tackles while Amy Fegan picker off seven steals and registered 25 tackles and 21 dodges. Kristin Illaria posted impressive statistics at the JV level last season, getting off a team-high 26 shots, capturing a team-leading 14 steals and topping the squad with 45 tackles.

Brittany Callahan & Tracey Mullery

Theresa Mascia had 38 tackles and an even dozen dodges and shots on goal while Melanie Roshto got off 11 shots and came up with 23 tackles.
Tracey Mullery and Fegan served as co-captains of last year’s JV team. Mullery has moved up to the starting assignment between the pipes and as the Warriors’ goalie, will be looked to keep the team in contention throughout the entire game.
"Mullery gained valuable experience and demonstrated leadership qualities with the junior varsity," added Bachert. "She has the tools and determination to do the job at the varsity level."
Last year, the Warriors’ opened the season against the Red Devils and were routed 9-0. In the second half of the season, Hunterdon Central blanked Watchung Hills 4-0 in a competitive contest. The 2003 edition of Warrior field hockey will compete at a higher level than last year’s team and there first challenge will come in the opener.
One item that should be noted is that the youth programs are beginning to send young players to the high school, having already been taught the basic skills and techniques before arriving on the Warren campus.
With the foundation buttressed by the upgraded youth programs coupled with the large turnout at the frosh and varsity levels, coach Bachert has the Watchung Hills field goal program geared to challenge for slots in the post-season.
