Highlights for Week Ending October 28, 2001

In Skyland Conference field hockey action on Tuesday, the Lady Warriors dropped a 2-0 decision to North Hunterdon as the game was a scoreless stalemate until there was 17 minutes, 30 seconds left on the game clock. Watchung Hills missed a penalty stroke in the first half that could have given them the lead. Goalie Christine Drewnowski came up with three official saves.
On Thursday, Westfield pulled out a 1-0 win in a non-conference confrontation as the Blue Devils scored the only goal of the game with three minutes, 20 seconds left in the first half.
"We dominated the field but could not put the ball in," said head coach Maria Bachert.

Junior Varsity - Freshman Season Review published Week of October 28, 2001

Future looks bright for field hockey

Kathy Nagle has the Lady Warriors' junior varsity field hockey squad sporting an overall record of 8-7-3 with two games remaining at press time. The squad has not lost any game by more than two goals while offensively, nine players have recorded points.
Sophomore forward Cally Ingram has been the top gun on the attack for Watchung Hills, netting a dozen goals as the Lady Warriors have scored 28 times. Two other sophomore forwards have also displayed offensive prowess as Melissa Schneiderman has tallied four goals and distributed 10 assists while Malloree Tarnowski has scored four goals and was credited with five assists.
Recording two goals and one assist each were sophomores Laura Coley and Lindsay Winget along with frosh Lauren Lavorerio while sophomore Catherine Mascia netted one goal and has picked up two assists. Frosh defender Sarah Fenstemaker has a goal and sophomore Zeenat Khan has picked up an assist.
Other sophomore members are Stephanie Barnet (midfielder), Kristen George (goalie), Allison Klug (defender), Lindsay McCalla (midfield), Kim Reydel (midfield) and Rebecca Wasser (defender).
"We have been in every game we have played," said Nagle. "In a 1-0 loss to Pingry that we playing pouring rain, we totally dominated the game offensively."
Watchung Hills battled Warren Hills to a 1-1 standoff as Ingram tallied the goal with an assist by Schneiderman. Trailing Hillsborough 1-0 at halftime, Lavorerio scored to rally the Lady Warriors to a 1-2 deadlock.
Learning the basic skills and techniques were 35 members of the Class of 2005, many of whom will challenge for starting assignments on next year's junior varsity squad with a few vying for varsity roster spots.

Highlights for Week Ending October 21, 2001

In field hockey, the Lay Warriors dropped a 2-0 decision to Warren Hills on Tuesday despite a great effort in the goal by senior Christine Drewnowski who came up with 18 saves. On Thursday, Watchung Hills lost to Hillsborough by a similar 2-0 score with Drewnowski stopping seven shots on the goal.

Highlights for Week Ending October 14, 2001

Watchung Hills was ousted from the quarterfinals of the Somerset County Field Hockey Tournament when the Pingry blanked the Lady Warriors 5-0 on Saturday in Martinsville. To make matters worse, senior Abbie Schafer was injured during the warm-up drill and received 10 stitches under her eye.
In a night game at Bridgewater-Raritan on Tuesday, the host squad pulled out a 1-0 victory. Two days later, Hunterdon Central defeated Watchung Hills 5-1. Allie Naskret tallied her second goal of the season with Cory Southern picking up an assist.

Field Hockey Highlights for Week Ending October 7, 2001

Jean Marie Albert was top gun on the attack as Watchung Hills defeated Franklin 3-2 in double overtime in a Somerset County Field Hockey Tournament played Saturday. The eighth-seeded Lady Warriors play top-seeded Pingry on Saturday at 2:00 PM in Martinsville.
Albert netted two goals as Watchung Hills defeated Franklin for the second time in four days. Rebecca Ruckriegel tallied the other goal while Abbie Schaffer dished off a pair of assists with Natalie D'Amato picking up a solo assist.
On Tuesday, Schaffer assisted on a goal by Nicole Emmons as Watchung Hills edged Franklin 1-0 in a Skyland Conference confrontation with goalie Christine Drewnowski picking up the shutout "W" between the posts.
Albert picked up an assist on Monday when Allie Naskret scored the only goal of the game for the Lady Warriors in a 2-1 loss to Phllipsburg in Warren County. On Thursday, it was a rematch with the Stateliners in Warren and Phillipsburg posted a 3-0 shutout.

Field Hockey Highlights for Week Ending September 30, 2001

Despite a strong effort by senior tri-captain Christine Drewnowski the goal, Watchung Hills dropped a 2-1 decision to North Hunterdon in Clinton Township on Friday afternoon. Drewnowski came up with a dozen saves, upping her season total to 77 but her teammates managed only five shots on the Lions cage.
Senior tri-captain Abbie Schaffer tallied a goal in the second half for the Lady Warriors who trailed 1-0 at halftime. It was her team-high third goal of the campaign for Schaffer who also has dished off three assists for a team-high six points.
On Monday, the Lady Warriors lost to Mount St. Mary after leading at intermission. Watchung Hills' other tri-captain, senior defender Kim Blackador was hit by a reverse stick flick to the eye and was taken to an emergency room where she received 20 stitches.

Field Hockey Highlights for Week Ending September 16, 2001

Watchung Hills turned in a impressive debut in field hockey, scoring twice in both halves while senior goalie Christine Drewnowski turned away six shots on goal to blank Franklin 4-0 on Friday in Warren. Senior forward Natalie D'Amato drilled a pair of goals into Franklin's cage while Allison Boyle contributed a goal and an assist. Senior forward Jean Marie Albert completed the scoring with senior midefielder Sarah Shipman credited with a pair of assists and senior Abbie Schafer adding one.
