D'Alessando, Tarnowski spur Lady Warriors past Somerville |
| With only three seniors on the 17-girl roster, the Watchung Hills field
hockey squad is a team of the future - but maturity struck early when the Lady Warriors defeated Somerville by
a score of 2-1 on Saturday in Somerville. Junior forward Malloree Tarnowski tickled the Pioneers' twine with the game-winning tally as 20 minutes remained in the game clock. Junior forward Allison Boylan was credited with the assist. Junior midfielder Kristen D'Alessandro gained the distinction of scoring the first goal of the season for Watching Hills when she connected off an assist from senior co-captain Joanna Lampert to give the Lady Warriors the first lead of the game in the opening half. Claudia Denson tied the game for Somerville later in the first half to set the stage for Tarnowski's game-winning goal. Junior keeper Kristen George turned in a strong effort between the pipes as she picked up the "W" in the goal by coming up with four official saves. Sophomore Sarah Fenstmaker and junior Allison Klug excelled in the defensive backfield for Watchung Hills. "We are young and I hoped the loss to Hunterdon Central would serve as a learning experience," said head coach Maria Bachert. "Not only did they learn, they lived up to their potential and beat a Somerville team for the first time in many years." A day earlier, Watchung Hills had opened its 2002 campaign against the Hunterdon Central, the defending Skyland Conference champions and the result was a 9-0 setback. Though the score sounds devastating, the Red Devils are one of the top five programs in the state, Watchung Hills never quit and keeper George displayed the techniques of a top-flight goalie when she came up with 13 saves and drew praise from the officials. Following a home contest against Hillsborough on Tuesday, the Lady Warriors travel to Washington for a clash with the Blue Streaks of Warren Hills who blanked Bridgewater-Raritan by a score of 2-0 in their seasonal debut. On Friday, Watchung Hills hosts Governor Livingston from the Mountain Valley Conference in a game that starts at 3:45 PM. The visiting Highlanders lost their season-opener to Mount St. Mary by a score of 2-1 on Friday. |

Young Lady Warriors open against defending champions |
| Watchung Hills opens its 2002 field hockey campaign on Friday afternoon
at 3:45 PM in Flemington against the defending Skyland Conference champion Red Devils of Hunterdon Central. It is an imposing challenge for head coach Maria Bachert's young squad of 16 players, only three of whom are seniors. With 11 juniors and two sophomores filling out the varsity roster, there is not doubt this will be a rebuilding season for the Warriors. "This group has a lot of heart," said Bachert. "They are so into it and are working hard every practice in upgrading the level of their techniques and overall performance." Senior Joanna Lampert and junior Kristen D'Allesandro, both midfielders, are the co-captains. Lampert is a strong player who does everything well while D'Aliessandro will be the key to a smooth transition game for the Lady Warriors. Rebecca Ruckriegel and Cory Southern, both forwards, are the other two seniors on the squad. The juniors include Allison Boylan, Kristen George, Cally Ingram, Allison Klug, Catherine Mascia, Lindsey McCulla, Ali Naskret, Melissa Schneiderman, Malloree Tarnowski and Lindsey Winget. The two sophomores elevated from the junior varsity program are Sarah Fenstmayer and Lauren Lavorerio. |
