Lady Warriors advance to post-season for first time in a decade

Published in Echoes-Sentinal - February 12, 2004

Watchung Hills will be going to the NJSIAA post-season tournament for the first time in over a decade. Head coach Sandy Whelan's Lady Warriors locked up a berth the Group IV tourney with back-to-back wins over Franklin and Westfield during the week to improve to 9-7. The only regular season target remaining is to roll up more wins so Watchung Hills gets as good a seed as possible.
With the Phillipsburg game postponed due to the inclement weather on Tuesday, the Lady Warriors rallied to topple Franklin 45-39 in Warren on February 5 and guarantee themselves the .500 or better record by February 7 that was necessary to gain entry to the NJSIAA sectional tournament.
"It was a team effort in producing the win over Franklin we needed to guarantee a berth in the states," stated Whelan. "We were down 17-10 in the second quarter when Jackie (Scharf) came off the bench to nail a quick three-pointer to get us back in the game. Kelli (Lane) sparked our defense and made our press work."
Senior Samantha Hare fueled the win in the "Battle of the Warriors" when she tickled the twine with a career-high 18 points that included a pair of three-pointers.
Michelle Feldman was runnerup in the scoring column, netting eight points while Scharf's point total of seven included the trey that ignited the Lady Warriors in the second quarter.
"Franklin's coach implemented a game plan that tried to stop Michelle," said Whelan. "Michelle turned in a great game and led our third quarter attack, scoring six points while opening up the court all game for Samantha who came through with the highest scoring game of her career."
"Bonnie made two clutch free throws when we were leading 41-39 with five seconds remaining," commented Whelan. "She also excelled defensively as did Jacki (Grace) as they combined to hold Franklin's top scorer to only six points."
On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Warriors took a big step on gaining a higher ranking when they routed Westfield 43-19 on the Blue Devils hardwood. Lane and Feldman shared game-high honors, netting nine points apiece.
Watchung Hills burst out to a 15-1 lead after eight minutes and upped its advantage to 23-4 by the halftime break. Jackie Sharf chipped in with a seven-point effort, Megan Kopecki netted six and Bonnie Abel finished with five points.
Frosh Tara Tielman made her varsity debut an impressive outing. Though she did not score, she hit the boards for five rebounds and handed off three assists.
