Nina Sutjiawan is not only the sole senior on the Watchung Hills golf team,
she is also the only female captain of a boys’ interscholastic team in the Garden State. Sutjiawan is also an outstanding
golfer who will occupy the No. 2 slot in head coach Dan Smith’s lineup.
"Our objective this year is to improve on last year’s mediocre team performance," said Smith. "If
we don’t qualify for the states as a team, I hope to have some golfers in both the boys and girls individual tournaments."
Sutjiawan has made it to the girls’ state tournaments the last two years, finishing as high as eighth in her sophomore
season. Her younger sister Gina, now a sophomore, qualified last year and Smith is looking for both of the Sutjiawan
sisters to make it again this season.
Last year’s No. 1 player John King has graduated but Smith has a good replacement in junior Zach Creed.
"Zach moved into the district for his sophomore year and made an immediate impact as a varsity starter, continued
Smith. "He has been shooting about 38 in his practice rounds this spring and will be our No. 1 player."
Matt Paralona is the second junior who has made the varsity lineup. He has shown a big improvement over his performance
at the junior varsity level last season and will has secured a place in the Warriors’ top six.
In addition to Gina Sutjiawan, the sophomore class will be represented in the varsity lineup by Vik Varma who also
earned a varsity letter as a freshman.
A new addition to the varsity program is freshman Matt Hunt who has been turning in nine-hole rounds of 42 over
the Warriors’ home course of Warren Brook in pre-season practices that have been hampered by the inclement weather.
Well this is a young roster, there is also experience. Look for the Warriors’ to challenge for a berth in the NJSIAA
team tournament along with the individual tournament. |
