Watchung Hills' Girls Soccer Highlights for week ending 09/15/02

Malik upsets defending champions

Becky Malik stole the spotlight as Watchung Hills opened its 2002 girls' soccer campaign by stealing a 2-1 victory over defending Skyland Conference - Raritan Division champion Hunterdon Central in the final six minutes on Thursday in Warren.
Coming off a 14-5-3 record in 2001 that included the championship banner from the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group III tournament, head coach Peter Lubrecht had his Lady Warriors reloaded after graduation took the key trio of Christine Fisher, Jen Grys and Carla Luardoni from his roster.
A sophomore midfielder, Malik pulled victory out of the jaws of defeat when she netted a pair of goals off assists from junior forward Melissa Murowski on both in the final six minutes to defeat the Red Devils. Lindsay Field put Hunterdon Central on the board with midway through the opening the half and the Red Devils maintained the one goal advantage until the final six minutes,
Sophomore keeper Kathryn Alario, who surrendered only a dozen goals as the starter during her frosh campaign, came up strong between the popes as she stopped three shots on goal. Watchung Hills built up a 10-3 advantage in official shots.
On Saturday morning, the Lady Warriors clashed with the Pioneers in Somerville. Though they peppered Somerville keeper Jusitine Clark with 14 official shots on goal, they could not penetrate the Pioneers' goal line as the contest ended in a scoreless draw. Alario was forced to come up with only two saves to receive credit for a shutout between the posts.
