Girls Soccer Highlights Week Ending September 30, 2001

Grys' goals cage Lions

Senior tri-captain Jen Grys was on target with her shots during the week as she personally accounted for all three goals scored by the Watchung Hills girls soccer squad. Grys has been named the Watchung Hills Regional High School Athlete of the Week by the staff of the Echoes-Sentinel and sponsored by Valley Automotive.
Grys, a midfielder, snapped a scoreless tie following the intermission as she netted both goals to spark Watchung Hills to a 2-0 victory over North Hunterdon in Warren on Friday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Lena Kalika and frosh midfielder Becky Malik were credited with assists.
Frosh goalkeeper Kathryn Alario stopped all four official shots on goal It was the fifth shutout of the season for Alario as the Lady Warriors
On Monday afternoon, the Lady Warriors journeyed to Morris County to play undefeated Morris Knolls in a non-conference confrontation in Denville. Grys netted a first half goal that kept Watchung Hills in contention through the final whistle in a 2-1 loss to the perennially powerful Golden Eagles who notched their sixth straight victory of the season. Byrnes turned aside 11 of the 13 official shots on goal while the Lady Warriors managed 14 shots on the Golden Eagles nest.

Lunardoni continues scoring outburst

Senior forward Carla Lunardoni improved on her performance a week ago that earned her the designation as the Echoes-Sentinal Player of the Week. On Friday afternoon in Warren, she tallied a career-high four goals to power the Lady Warriors to a 7-0 rout of Warren Hills in a Skyland Conference girls soccer match.
Junior midfielder Whitney Piendak chipped in with a goal and two assists while Jen Grys tallied a goal and dished off an assist.
Frosh Kathryn Alario and junior Dawn Mellen combined to turn aside three shots on goal to sharing the Lady Warrior's fourth shutout of the campaign between the pipes.
On Wednesday evening, Watchung Hills and Hunterdon Central battled to a scoreless draw under the lights after two overtime periods. Alario came up with eight saves.

Lunardoni spurs Lady Warriors

Watchung Hills turned in an explosive effort, scoring four times in the opening half as the Lady Warriors routed Franklin 5-0 in the varsity girls 2001 soccer debut in Warren. Senior forward Carla Lunardoni, who was chosen the Echoes-Sentinel Athlete of the Week, made the most of her final opening day as she powered the Lady Warriors first half outburst, netting a goal and dishing off two assists.
Sophomore midfielder Melissa Muroski chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Lunardoni was in the right spot at the right time for the Warriors in their 1-0 win over Somerville on Friday. With 15 minutes remaining on the game clock, she converted a rebound into the Pioneers cage for the only goal of the game.
"Carla's efforts are the results of her hard work in the off-season," said coach Pete Lubrecht. "She has a great work ethic and came to camp in unbelievable shape. This is a nice honor that reflects the impact she had on our program."
Keeper Kathryn Alario came up with four saves to post the shutout between the pipes fo the Lady Warriors.
