By Dennis Wilson

Watchung Hills three-peated as NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group III girls tennis champions by sweeping the singles competition in posting a 3-2 win over Middletown South on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Amanda Graziadei breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Karen Shih in the No. 1 singles slot to lead by example. It went three sets at second singles with Kathy Lifson coming through with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory against Romy Lohse. At third singles, Jen Millman battled Melissa Zampella for every point in posting a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Although Gavornik and Johns suffered their first loss of the season in the sectional final to Lindsay Moran and Kristyn Villany, the Warriors' top tandem did not take long to avenge the blemish on their record. On Saturday, Gavornick and Johns, seeded third in the NJSIAA doubles tournament, coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Millburn duo of Rebecca Gilbert and Whitney Kopech in the Round of 16 to advance to a rematch with the Middletown South twosome in the afternoon. Matched against Pingry's second seeded duo of Kexy Knopp and Jessica Magidson for the fourth time in two years, Gavornik and Johns rallied to defeat the Big Blue tandem 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 for the third time in four tries, losing only in last year's state tournament finale.

In the 2000 title match, Knoff and Magidson registered a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory after losing to the Warriors in the Somerset County Tournament championship finale.
