Milkosky countdown is 3 |
| Marlene Milkosky began her sixth season as the head coach with a career
mark of 93-12. With four straight victories to start the 2002 campaign, Friday's non-conference match with Summit
in Warren could provide the setting for Milkosky to reach the 100-win plateau. Watchung Hills defeated Phillipsburg in the season-opener and added victories over Franklin, Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Hillsborough to complete the first week's schedule. Last year, Watchung Hills rolled up 22 straight wins while four-peating as Somerset County champions and reaching the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions for the second consecutive year. Though Watchung Hills graduated four starters in June, Milkosky has reloaded around her three returning starters. Junior Amanda Graziadei returns at No. 1 singles after finishing second in the Somerset County Tournament. She made her season debut on Thursday against Scotch Plains-Fanwood, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Elizabeth Pilkington. The next day, she routed Hillsborough's Katie Merrian 6-0, 6-2. Kathy Lifson, the team captain, returns for her senior season as the reigning second singles champion from the Somerset County Tournament. With Graziadei sidelined for the first two matches, Lifson posted wins in the No. 1 singles slot before moving back to second singles where she routed Scotch Plains/Fanwood's Cara Hurley 6-0, 6-1 on Thursday and vanquished Hillsborough's Catherine Kinrace 6-1,6-2 on Friday. Sophomore Chrissy Principe, a starter at second doubles as a frosh, moves into the No. 3 singles slot after opening with back-to-back wins at second singles. Against Shannon Gomes of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Principe cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win and then reversed the scores, routing Hillsborough's Erin Aiello 6-2, 6-0. Stacey Gavornik teams with Rachel Huffin in the No. 1 doubles slot and the duo is off to a 4-0 start. Against Scotch Plains-Fanwood, the duo defeated Karena Gotliboym 6-3, 6-3 while the Hillsborough tandem of Caroline Chen and Jen Wagner fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Nina Fitjiawan and Allison Schwartz form the second doubles team that came on strong to defeat Hillsborough's Chrystel Arrived and Sara Lavell 7-5, 6-0. Moving into the third singles slot when Lifson and Principe moved uo to replace the idle Graiadei was Anisha Bhasin. On Wednesday, she coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Marsuray Kamara. Watchung Hills is off to another great start and now the focus is on the coach and when she reaches the 100-win plateau. |
