Lady Warriors record two huge wins

Published in Echoes-Sentinal - April 8, 2004

Head coach Jennifer Gershberg's Lady Warriors started the 2004 outdoor track and field campaign with an outstanding effort in a tri-meet against Franklin and Hunterdon Central in Somerset on April 1.
"We had two huge wins," said an elated Gershberg. "What a nice surprise it was and a wonderful team accomplishment."
It was truly a team effort in a 70 1/2 - 69 1/2 victory over Hunterdon Central as six Lady Warriors produced first place efforts against the that the Courier News had ranked number one in the area in the preseason. Franklin was ranked seventh.
Monica Rodriguez led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200-meter dash, breaking the tape in 28.2 seconds. Kristen Piatkowski was the runnerup in 29.5 seconds while Sarah O'Meara finished third with a clocking of 29.1 seconds.
Melissa Mott flipped the eight-pound ball 29 feet, 4 inches as Watchung Hills placed 1-2-3 in the shot put competition. Krystina Laucik was runnerup with a toss of 28 feet while Liz Gilbert placed third with a top distance of 26 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Lauren Chun soared over the bar at nine feet to win the pole vault while Jessica Baculis finished first in the high jump when she cleared four feet, six inches.
Freshman Kristin Beckert turned in an impressive varsity debut with a pair of third place finishes against Franklin. She was clocked in 2:55 in the 800-meter run and turned in a time of 6:15 in the 1600-meter run. Her older sister Kaitlin, a junior, placed third in the 3200-meter run when she was timed in 13:30.

Warriors look sharp in season-opener

Published in Echoes-Sentinal - April 8, 2004

Even though Watchung Hills came out on the short end of both scores in a tri-meet that opened the 2004 outdoor track and field campaign on April 1, the Warriors displayed major improvement over last season under third-year coach Mary Sok.
"My first year, we scored only 19 points against Hunterdon Central and last year we lost by 12,: said Sok. "To only lose 71-69 clearly shows the tremendous improvement we have made."
Junior quad-captain Adam Cornelisse was impressive in his season debut. He dominated the sprints, racing through the tape to win the 100-meter dash (11.6), 200-meter dash (24.0) and 400-meter dash (52.7) while running the second leg on the Warriors' victorious 4 X 400-meter relay quartet.
Chris Palmer, also a junior quad-captain, duplicated Cornelisse's performance by gliding over the 110-meter high hurdles to post the winning time of 15.7 seconds and cruising to a first place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a clocking of 59.2 seconds. He hopped, stepped and jumped 40 feet, 5 1/4 inches to win the triple jump and ran the anchor leg on the winning relay team.
Steve Kinney, a senior quad-captain, was fastest to the finish in the 1600-meter run (4:38) and 3200-meter run (10:34). Nathan Sahlman cleared the bar at 10 feet to win the pole vault competition.
Saturday's Skyland Conference Relays were postponed due to the inclement weather. A new date has not been set.

109 candidates out for track & field

Published in Echoes-Sentinal - April 1, 2004

Numerically, the 2004 Watchung Hills track & field program is a success before the first starter’s gun is fired. There are 60 candidates out for the boys team under head coach Mary Sok while the girls’ squad under the direction of Jennifer Greenberg has 49 members.
Sok, now in her third year at the helm, is looking for improvement in a program that went 6-3-1 in dual meet competition in 2003. There are nine seniors on the boys’ roster, including two of the four quad-captains, Jake Crystal and Steve Kinney. The other members of the Class of 2004 are Brandon Chen, Jon Cesareo, Jose Fernandez, Andrew Lam, Kevin Leibler, Shawn Mitchell and Jimmy Shih.
Adam Cornelisse and Chris Palmer are the juniors who have been named quad-captains. The other 11 juniors on the team are Dave Heath, Mark Kearsing, John Park, Sharmir Parmar, Mike Rameriz, Steve Reif, Jose Rodriguez, Mike Schroeder, Matt Sestokos, Greg Shipman and Frank Summers.
"Palmer qualfied for the Group IV meet last May and had an excellent indoor season, especially in the triple jump," stated Sok. "Cornelisse set a new school record indoors and has looked good in practice."
Included among the 20 sophomores on the team are Alex Chin, Bobby Dahlinger, Anthony DiNuzzo, Dave Fetchko, Eric Hansen, Steve Hirsch, Vladimir Kostrama, Amraj Lalli, Brian Monetti, Jeff MacConnell, Chris Mosquera, Jeremy Pennino, Nick Profeta, Adam Pogash, Nate Sahleman, Steve Smith, Scott Thomas, Harrison Tsai, Dhiraj Verma and Kevin Wilfong.
There are 18 newcomers to the program. The freshmen are Greg Bartolomei, Jack Beckert, Matt Conrad, Matt Crystal, Greg Dubois, Pete Gallo, Anthony Guerriero, Dean Hsu, Yousef Janjari, Tim Koby, Elias Landau, William Lordi, Chris Lui, Kelly Mak, Bobby Mandetta, Alex Necovski, Travis Poole plus Dan Tarantula.
Gershberg’s girls’ roster includes six seniors, three of whom are serving as quad-captains along with junior Lauren Chun. They are Jennifer Dubois, Lauren Kopecki and Natalie Stabenow. The other seniors are Melissa Mott, Stephanioe Paltjon and Jessica Wong.
"Kopecki had a strong indoor season while Chun made it to the Group IV championship meet as a sophomore," commented Gershberg. "Several of our runners participated in winter track and that is a good omen."
In addition to Chun, there are 11 other juniors on the team. They are Neha Agarwal, Jessica Baculis, Julie Bartolomei, Kaitlin Beckert, Danielle Clark, Alex Grodeck, Teresa Mascia, Kristen Piatkowski, Shanti Prasad, Maria Rodrigues and Vicki Webbe.
Sophomore Monica Rodriguez was impressive in the dashes for the Lady Warriors this winter. She is one a dozen members of the Class of 2006 on the roster including Adele Banks, Jackie Bilancia, Brittany Ciaszek, Hanrindu Plooy, Laura Fernandes, Liz Gilbert, Sarah Gillis, Caitlin Lashley, Krystina Laucik, Sung Moon and Danielle Zilg.
Supplying a class-high 19 members to the team is the freshmen contingent of Kristin Beckert, Jessica Cape, Traci Finkel, Kaitlin Fischer, Emily Gatti, Jessica George, Amanda Givens, Sarah Heath, Nina Horowitz, Jenifer Kampe, Alex Kinney, Ryan Olexson, Sarah O’Meara, Jo Palk, Nicole Reil, Stephanie Stambaugh, Patricia Tong, Leas Umansky and Jamies Waryn.
